Pearl Mullet

Dr Yeralan was invited to speak at the opening ceremonies of the Fourth International Pearl Mullet Festival in Van, Turkey (May 31, 2013),  The pearl mullet (alburnus tarichi , Turkish: inci kefali) is a species unique to Lake Van.  Lake Van is a large endorheic saline soda lake with a unique ecology. While the mullet is well-adapted to the saline environment, it treks upstream to fresh tributaries to lay its eggs. The mullet was recently recovered from near extinction assisted by the efforts of the YYU University and Doga Gozculeri Dernegi. (See more pictures from the festival.)
