Introduction
Artificial intelligence has recently entered the domain of educational evaluation. Several educational jurisdictions have begun experimenting with automated scoring of student writing, drawing on machine learning models trained on large corpora of previously graded essays (Dikli 2006; Shermis and Burstein 2013).
Public discussion surrounding these developments has largely centered on familiar concerns: whether automated systems are fair, whether they reproduce biases present in training data, and whether machines can meaningfully evaluate human expression. While these questions are legitimate, they address only the surface of a deeper institutional dynamic.
Educational systems are not merely pedagogical environments; they are also complex decision systems. Within them, authority, evaluation, and feedback form interconnected loops that regulate behavior across students, teachers, and institutions. These loops operate on particular temporal scales. When the surrounding technological environment changes its pace, the stability of such systems may be affected.
This essay proposes that the emerging debates around AI grading may be better understood through the concept of institutional time constants. Institutions develop mechanisms for decision-making that are adapted to particular temporal environments. When those environments accelerate, the existing mechanisms may become the slowest component in the system’s feedback structure.
Changing underlying parameters that shape a system often give rise to observable epiphenomena, a pattern frequently examined in the social sciences. For example, in discussions of globalization, scholars often describe transformations of modern society in terms of shifts in the temporal contours of social life — changes in the pacing, synchronization, and acceleration of human activity (Scheuerman 2023). In the language of systems theory, such observations can be interpreted more precisely as changes in the time constants governing institutional processes. Technologies may evolve on increasingly short time scales, while legal, educational, and political institutions respond according to much longer characteristic times. The resulting disparity between these temporal regimes is a central feature of contemporary technological disruption.
Authority as a Historical Mechanism of Evaluation
Educational evaluation has historically relied upon authority. Teachers, professors, and examiners are entrusted with the task of assessing performance and assigning grades. Their judgments function as the closure mechanism of the evaluation process.
From a logical standpoint, such systems may appear vulnerable to the classical fallacy of appeal to authority. Yet in practice, authority performs an indispensable organizational role. Complex institutions cannot operate if every judgment must be independently verified. Titles, credentials, and professional roles compress trust and allow decisions to be accepted without constant re-litigation (Weber 1978; Luhmann 1979).
Historically, this arrangement worked reasonably well because the informational environment surrounding education evolved slowly. Knowledge structures changed gradually, professional reputations developed over decades, and the pace of institutional adaptation was measured in years rather than months.
In such an environment, authority-based evaluation functioned as a slow but stable integrator of experience and judgment.
Institutional Time Constants
Institutions may be understood as dynamical systems whose feedback mechanisms operate with characteristic time constants. In engineering terms, the time constant of a system determines how rapidly it responds to changes in input conditions (Ogata 2010).
Educational institutions traditionally operate with relatively large time constants. Courses unfold over semesters, curricular revisions require years, and reputations develop over long professional trajectories. The evaluation mechanisms embedded within these institutions reflect these temporal assumptions.
Authority-based evaluation fits naturally within such a slow system. The judgment of a professor represents a distilled accumulation of professional experience. Errors or biases in individual decisions are expected to be corrected gradually through reputational feedback and institutional oversight.
This slow correction process resembles evolutionary adaptation with long generational cycles.
Technological Compression of Feedback Loops
Digital technologies have altered the temporal structure of information systems. Data collection, communication, and analysis now occur at dramatically accelerated rates. In many domains, decision loops have been compressed from months or years into days or even seconds (Benkler 2006).
Machine learning systems exemplify this compression. They can process large volumes of data, detect statistical patterns, and update predictive models at speeds that exceed traditional institutional cycles.
When such technologies enter the educational domain, they introduce new feedback dynamics. Automated essay scoring, for instance, can evaluate thousands of responses in a fraction of the time required for human graders. Learning analytics platforms can monitor student progress continuously rather than episodically (Williamson 2017).
The result is a shift in the temporal resolution of evaluation.
Temporal Mismatch
The tensions surrounding AI grading may therefore reflect a mismatch between two temporal regimes.
On the one hand, authority-based evaluation represents a mechanism adapted to a slow informational environment. On the other hand, algorithmic systems operate within a fast feedback environment characterized by rapid iteration and continuous data processing.
When these two regimes interact, authority may become the slowest component in the feedback loop. From a systems perspective, such mismatches often produce pressure for reconfiguration.
Importantly, this does not imply that authority-based evaluation is normatively flawed. Rather, it may simply be mismatched to the pace of the surrounding technological system.
Co-evolution of the Educational System
Educational systems consist of interacting agents: students, teachers, institutions, and increasingly, computational tools. When the evaluation mechanism changes, the behavior of these agents adapts accordingly. Students learn which forms of writing produce favorable outcomes, teachers adjust instruction, and algorithms trained on previously graded work absorb patterns generated by these adaptations. The resulting process is one of socio-technical co-evolution between human actors and computational systems (Yeralan 2026).

auditing algorithmic outcomes,
interpreting ambiguous cases,
and shaping the broader educational objectives of the system.
In this arrangement, authority does not disappear; it governs the structure within which faster feedback processes operate.
Conclusion
The introduction of artificial intelligence into educational evaluation has sparked debate about fairness, bias, and the nature of human judgment. While these discussions are important, they may obscure a deeper structural transformation.

Digital technologies have compressed those temporal scales. The resulting mismatch between institutional time constants and technological feedback cycles is likely to drive institutional adaptation.
From this perspective, the emergence of AI-assisted evaluation should not be viewed primarily as a confrontation between humans and machines. Rather, it represents a reconfiguration of feedback structures within a socio-technical system whose temporal architecture is changing.
Understanding this transformation requires not only technical or ethical analysis but also attention to the temporal dynamics through which institutions evolve.
